Leading responsible plastics stewardship in New Zealand

Mar 31, 2026

Hexatronic New Zealand continues to strengthen its commitment to environmental responsibility through its work with Operation Clean Sweep NZ (OCS NZ). From its manufacturing site in Porirua, the team has embedded robust processes to prevent plastic pellet loss and protect local waterways.

Why Hexatronic joined Operation Clean Sweep

Polymer pellets are essential in fiber‑optic manufacturing, which makes responsible handling critical. Hexatronic in New Zealand joined OCS NZ because the program aligns with the company’s values of transparency and environmental responsibility. Independent audits help verify that the team’s practices meet the high standards we set for ourselves and that real safeguards are in place to prevent any pellet loss to the environment.

Strong on‑site controls that make a difference

Hexatronic has built a comprehensive system for managing how resin materials are handled on site. Procedures cover spill prevention, containment, and housekeeping, with a clear focus on keeping all raw materials fully controlled. Technical measures include dust filtration, protected drainage, and stormwater filters, supported by routine inspections. Together, these reduce the risk of pellets escaping during everyday operations.

An extreme storm event in 2025 put these systems to the test. The deluge was strong enough to lift a 40 kg manhole cover and dislodge sump frames. Afterward, the team reviewed all stormwater controls and upgraded the sump filters for added security. Each filter is now fitted beneath a custom stainless‑steel plate and locked in place by the grate. This tailored solution reflects our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement.

Responsible supply chain

Environmental oversight extends beyond the factory. Hexatronic requires suppliers to hold ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications and ensures damaged packaging is contained and inspected during all deliveries, whether domestic or international.
As an MPI Transitional Facility, the site also follows strict processes for devanning and managing sweepings long before materials enter production.

OCS NZ audit results

During the 2025 OCS NZ re‑audit, the site was found to be operating above minimum requirements. The auditor highlighted the strength of the procedures and the passion shown by the team. Simon Wilkinson, OCS NZ auditor, shared: “The Hexatronic site was a great example of the importance of having a staff member that will champion the programme and inspire the rest of the team to implement change.”

Plant Engineer, Torv Rozing, is passionate about protecting the environment and has pushed the site to implement measures that are beyond simple compliance. His enthusiasm for OCS is catching.

A model for responsible polymer use in manufacturing

Hexatronic’s approach shows how polymer‑using manufacturing can operate responsibly and help protect New Zealand’s waterways. By embedding best practices, inviting independent scrutiny, and continuously refining systems, the team raises the standard for stewardship across the industry.
