Hexatronic New Zealand has taken another significant step forward in its sustainability journey, advancing its ambition to recycle 100% of internal resin scrap and return it to production as a replacement for virgin material in its jacketing lines.

Over the past year, the company has invested in several pieces of equipment at the plant to enable this capability. The latest addition is a new industrial shredder, which processes both ducting and purge from production scrap. The system transforms these materials into regrind suitable for reuse in manufacturing, helping close the loop on internal waste.

Hexatronic New Zealand Managing Director, Phil Jones, highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative. He said: “A lot of time, effort and focus have been put into our recycling programme. Being so far away from the rest of the world, we’ve needed to look internally to solve our waste issues and we’re excited to see the benefits of this going forward.”

The new capability forms part of Hexatronic New Zealand’s broader sustainability programme, which focuses on reducing waste, improving resource efficiency, and delivering more sustainable products to customers.

Hexatronic New Zealand is a committed participant in Operation Clean Sweep New Zealand (OCS NZ), a voluntary programme focused on preventing plastic pollution. The initiative aligns closely with Hexatronic’s values around transparency and environmental responsibility.

At the Porirua site, this commitment is supported by clear systems and daily practices. A comprehensive Resin Material Handling SOP defines procedures for spill prevention, containment and housekeeping, supported by engineering controls such as protected drainage infrastructure, stormwater sump filters and regular inspections.

The site applies a continuous improvement approach rather than simple compliance. Following an extreme weather event, stormwater controls were reviewed and further strengthened, reinforcing the site’s focus on real-world performance and environmental protection.

During the 2025 OCS NZ re-audit, Hexatronic New Zealand was found to be operating above minimum programme requirements, with auditors highlighting both the strength of the procedures and the strong engagement among site staff. This ongoing commitment helps protect local waterways and supports Hexatronic New Zealand’s role as a responsible local manufacturer.
