Splitters and Other Passive Devices

Passive optical components such as Splitters, Wavelength Division Multiplexors (WDM) are used in certain fiber optic network topologies.

Fiber optic splitters provide division of optical power from one or two input ports into several output ports. Symmetric optical power splitters are used for fiber optic communication systems such as PON Fiber To The Home (FTTH) networks. Splitters come in several flavors, for splicing in cabinets or closures, pre-terminated or in splitter modules for quick and easy installation.

WDMs are used to multiplex or de-multiplex fiber optical signals with different wavelengths. This is a common technology to increase bandwidth in an existing fiber. WDM components are categorized by the number and width of the wavelength channels used; Dense WDM (DWDM) offer largest number of wavelength channels, and Coarse WDM (CWDM) offer fewer channels at a lower cost.
